About the Butterfly Garden Bee Garden Bed

The Butterfly Garden at Canyon Lake at 4181 Jackson Blvd. is a 50th (1997) Anniversary Rapid City Garden Club project and features all Butterfly plants.

There is also a Bee garden bed at the Education Garden on 2900 Canyon Lake Drive (behind the Canyon Lake Activities Center) that was a 75th Anniversary Project.

Both of these gardens are for education and showcasing perennials, annuals and shrubs that attract butterflies and bees.

Photos and a list of butterfly and bee attracting plants are available on this page.

Rapid City is designated as a Bee City USA affiliate. This means the city is committed to protecting native pollinators like bees.

It was the first city in South Dakota to receive this designation.

Welcoming Flutters into Our Garden

Butterflies, like humming hummingbirds, add beauty, color, and movement to a
garden. And, like the tiny birds, they feed on nectar-rich flowers. But butterflies prefer flat heads or narrow spikes of numerous tiny flowers, which offer a landing platform or perch to hold onto when feeding. Flowers in the daisy family are butterfly favorites and are sure to attract butterflies anywhere. Here are a few plants that butterflies like.
