About the Arboretum

This shared partnership between the Rapid City Garden Club and the City of Rapid City showcases over 100+ trees as an Arboretum for education, beauty and reflection. Ralph Coe worked for the Soil Conservation Service as a long-time west-river resident. Memory Lane was dedicated in 1981 with a granite wall memorial and trees to recognize Rapid City Garden Club Honorary and Deceased Members.

Over the years the area has been made available to commemorate significant events for families, groups and individuals. Rapid City is a designated Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for 44 consecutive years. This recognition honors the city’s commitment to urban forest management and meets the four standards of the Tree City USA program: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget, and an Arbor Day Observance.

Plant a Memorial Tree

in the Arboretum

Memorial trees provide a meaningful and personal way to honor deceased loved ones and can be planted in almost any park within the Rapid City park system. However, trees with memorial plaques are only allowed in the Arboretum. For questions about possible locations and tree types, please contact the Urban Forester at the Parks Division using the application below. The costs for the trees and plaques are the responsibility of the applicant, and once everything is ready, the parks staff will gather and place the tree and plaque at the selected site. Applicants will be notified once the project is complete. Your contribution with a Memorial Tree and Plaque creates a lasting memory for your loved one and supports the City of Rapid City as a Tree City USA.
